Direct examinations can be performed for a variety of reasons. Routine O&M operations (example, installing a new branch connection) provide an opportunity to gather useful information about the condition of pipe, but many times pipe is excavated and exposed specifically to gather information to support pipeline integrity management programs. For example, verification digs are made following ILI or direct examination is performed as part of ECDA or SCCDA. Exposed pipe represents an opportunity to gather much more information than just qualitative observations about coating condition or to measure pit depths.

The course will teach students how to select features identified by ILI for further investigation and will show how direct examination results can be used to validate ILI results. In addition, the course will explain the relationship of direct examination to the developing PHMSA Integrity Verification Plan (IVP) requirements.
